Danganronpa (ダンガンロンパ) is a multimedia franchise spanning video games, manga, anime, and live-action theatre productions. The name of the series is a portmanteau of the Japanese words for "bullet" (弾丸 dangan) and "refute" (論破 ronpa). Danganronpa was created by Kazutaka Kodaka for Spike Chunsoft.
Danganronpa tells a tale of despair and the hope that overcomes it. The first video game in the series, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (2010), trapped fifteen amnesiac students in the confides of Hope's Peak Academy, a prestigious academy attended by 'Ultimate/Super High School Level' students, as they are forced into a battle of life and death by a despair-inducing bear known as Monokuma.
The main video games in the series generally take a visual novel approach, with characters forced into the logic-based Class Trials once a murder has been committed. There currently exist three of these main Danganronpa games: Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, and Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony. In addition, there exists the spin-off Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls, multiple mobile applications, manga and light novel series and adaptions, stage productions, an anime adaption of the first game, and the Danganronpa 3 three-part anime series.
