Back before you came into my life Steven, I wanted everyone to feel the pain I felt. I realized I must make up for my awful behavior by bringing joy to others.

Blue Diamond, or Blue for short, is a Homeworld Gem and a member of the Great Diamond Authority that formerly ruled over the Gem race. She first appears in a flashback in "The Answer" and debuts in person in "Steven's Dream".

As a result of Era 3, Blue Diamond now uses her powers to bring joy to other Gems through her clouds, created from her vaporized tears, which make someone happy once coming into contact with them.

Appearance

As one of the rulers of Homeworld, Blue Diamond has a massive size, with her towering height making her own Pearl appear tiny in comparison. However, her somewhat hunched posture, combined with her long, sweeping cloak, gives her a relatively smaller and more despondent silhouette than if she were standing straight.

Her complexion is azure, and she has long, straight, alice blue hair which curls inward at the ends. Two noticeable and symmetrical locks of her hair curl and point inwards towards her face just below her cheekbones. A unique feature of her hair are two lengths of that lead from each side of her head and physically connect on her chest just below her gem, giving it an almost shawl-like appearance. She has a long ovoid face, a full upper lip, and a straight nose. She also possesses large, sad, downward-slanting eyes with bold mascara on the lower lashes, giving the appearance of a weeping woman – most likely due to her depression over the supposed shattering of Pink Diamond. Her irises are cyan with black diamond-shaped pupils and she has thin arching eyebrows.

Her gemstone is located on her chest above her sternum, and she wears a long navy blue cloak that touches the ground. Underneath the upper part of her cloak, she wears a navy blue hood. Her height is similar to Yellow Diamond, only obscured by her hunched posture making her look shorter.

Personality

Before Era 3

Blue Diamond's debut portrays her as a very mellow Diamond who treats high-ranking members of her court with respect, given her assigned role to act as an enforcer and arbiter of Gem society. According to Holly Blue Agate, Blue Diamond has a reputation for mercy and forgiveness. "Saving" Greg from the threat of the Cluster after taking a liking to him, unaware that the Cluster is no longer active, demonstrates this. Another example of Blue being merciful is when she restrained herself from attacking "Rose Quartz" (Steven) and gives him a chance to speak. However, as with Yellow Diamond, her true nature may be at odds with her reputation, as she sentences Ruby to be shattered for accidentally fusing with Sapphire while trying to do her job and saving her.

Steven's Dream 205

Blue Diamond's temperament appears to have changed significantly in the 5,000 years following the supposed shattering of Pink Diamond. She fell into a prolonged state of grief and depression upon believing Pink Diamond was shattered. She is unable to let go of the past, becoming fixated on preserving Pink Diamond's legacy. Her efforts to maintain the late diamond's zoo, save Earth specimens from the Cluster's emergence, and her refusal to shatter the Rose Quartzes that once served under Pink Diamond shows this behavior. She continues to regard the Earth as Pink Diamond's colony, and, due to being unaware that the Cluster is bubbled, is visibly saddened by the fact that the planet will eventually be destroyed.

Additionally, Blue Diamond seems to not understand humans, given by how she was surprised that Greg was able to comprehend and sympathize with her pain of losing a loved one, in addition to displaying an apparent unawareness of masculine pronouns, though this is understandable since she is not native to Earth and has had very little reason to get to know humans.

The Trial 135

Blue Diamond, as shown in the episode "The Trial", is extremely diplomatic. Against Yellow Diamond's wishes, she allowed Steven to continue making his case during his trial, though she did lose her temper when his recounting of events differed. She nonetheless seemed to want to hear the defending Zircon's theory on how and why Pink Diamond was shattered. When Yellow Diamond snaps and poofs both Zircons present at the trial, Blue Diamond confronts her and scolds her for not having enough restraint to hear the case out. This shows that Blue Diamond may be as merciful and forgiving as her gems claim – at the very least, she certainly has greater respect for due process and an interest in the truth.

In "Reunited", despite her unreasoning aggression towards the Crystal Gems, Steven later heard Blue's thoughts, that despite seeking to do them harm it only made the pain she felt worsen and her longing to see Pink grow.

After learning of Rose Quartz and Pink Diamond being the same person, she has shown concern over Steven along with Yellow Diamond. She has also shown extreme affection for Steven/Pink as seen through the effect her powers have on those around her, as along with extreme sentimentalism causing Yellow to have to reign her in. Additionally, Blue is shown to have a humorous side to her, poking fun at Steven's name in "Familiar" and making remarks that amuse Yellow and White Diamond in "Change Your Mind".

Together Alone 164

Despite her more merciful, compassionate, and forgiving nature, she is shown to be extremely unforgiving and derogatory towards fusions of different gems, something that she shares in common with Yellow Diamond. In "Together Alone", she was extremely cynical and cruel to the Crystal Gems, especially Garnet, referring to her as "that". She also demanded Steven and Connie un-fuse and doesn't stop Yellow Diamond from locking Stevonnie in a prison tower.

Change Your Mind 145

However, after Steven challenges her beliefs when she comes back to check on him, she breaks down and realized that she had been making Pink Diamond suffer all those times she locked her up and made her cry. She remorsefully admits that it was right of Pink to leave Homeworld since she hadn't been treating her right. With this resolve, she decides to help Steven and Connie escape, even going as far as accepting Steven as himself and briefly fighting Yellow Diamond to help him and his friends make it safely back to Earth.

After Era 3

Homeworld Bound 112

Throughout Steven Universe: The Movie, Blue is shown to be much more caring and gentle when speaking with others than she previously was. Like her fellow Diamonds, she was originally clingy towards Steven.

In "Homeworld Bound", it is revealed that Blue has realized the error of her ways when it comes to trying to get others to feel the emotional pain she felt, and that she now desires to bring happiness to others, freely letting other Gems experience joy when laying on her clouds. She is also shown to be extremely helpful and loving towards Steven and Spinel, having fun with the latter, and desperately attempting to aid the former with his newfound issues.

History

Ancient History

Not much is known about Blue Diamond's exact past. Over the course of thousands of years, Blue Diamond amassed a great amount of respect, colonies, and Gems. Her role in the Great Diamond Authority was one of diplomacy, meaning she enforced White Diamond's rules on Homeworld.

Familiar 274

When Pink Diamond was eventually created, Blue and the other Diamonds grew a close relationship with her. Blue found Pink's immature personality to be charming at times, but would also tend to be strict on her under specific circumstances. In "Familiar", Blue recalls a time where Pink named a batch of Pyrite "Fool's Gold" to White's dismay. She also recalls the many times her, Yellow, and White would gather at her pool area, where Pink would sing underneath the water while they would attempt to guess the song. Blue, along with the other Diamonds, would also attend the many parties Pink would hold in celebration of the Diamond Authority's achievements.

Whenever Pink was locked in the tower as punishment, Blue would come to reprimand her for her wrongdoing. One such incident involved Pink bringing colorful organic creatures into the ballroom, only for them to run loose through the palace and chase the Pearls around. One of the creatures had crawled up Blue's neck, making her shriek and swat it away. An exasperated Blue added that White was displeased to the point that she would likely take Pink's Pearl away.

Over 6,000 Years Ago

Pink was eventually given charge of her own colony, the planet Earth. She realized the beauty of this world and wished to cease the colonization process. She pleaded with Blue to spare Earth for the sake of the organic life thriving on it, only to be refused. Blue instead had humans gathered from their families and gave Pink her own Zoo.

Over 5,750 Years Ago

Unbeknownst to Blue and the other Diamonds, Pink has created her alter-ego Rose Quartz and rebelled alongside her Pearl to form the Crystal Gems. In retaliation, Blue Diamond gathers her court and calls upon a Sapphire to Earth's Cloud Arena to know what Rose's next move would be. She later thanks Sapphire for receiving her vision that the Crystal Gems would soon attack the Cloud Arena, believing the Rebellion would end that day.

When the Crystal Gems eventually show up, Blue Diamond flees in her palanquin, but later threatens to shatter Ruby when she accidentally fuses with Sapphire during the bedlam.

On the Moon Base, Blue scolds Pink for continuously coming up with excuses to cease colonization, and reassures her that as long as she maintains positivity, her Gems would reflect that and inevitably end the Rebellion.

Around 5,050 Years Ago

When Pink stages her own shattering and continues her life as Rose Quartz, Blue believes her to be truly gone and is flung into a deep depression. In addition to taking over Pink's Zoo, Blue becomes obsessed with preserving anything that is related to Pink and remains in a constant state of mourning and regret for thousands of years.

Your Mother and Mine (250)

Along with the other Diamonds, Blue assists in unleashing the Corrupting Light with the hopes of wiping out all Gems on Earth but instead causes any Gems exposed to the light to become Corrupted.

"The Answer"

On his birthday, Garnet explains to Steven about how Ruby and Sapphire first met. After Rose Quartz and Pearl rebel, Blue Diamond calls Sapphire to Earth to share a vision of the future. Once Sapphire explains what the rebels will do on the Cloud Arena, Blue Diamond thanks Sapphire for her vision. Once Rose and Pearl show up, Blue Diamond's Palanquin grows spider legs to get her to safety and protect her. Blue Diamond is later disgusted by Ruby and Sapphire's fusion, threatening to shatter Ruby for fusing with a member of her court.

"It Could've Been Great"

When Steven asks Peridot who the mural behind him is depicting, Peridot reveals that it is Blue Diamond.

"Steven's Dream"

Steven's Dream 173

Blue Diamond returns to Earth one last time to pay her respects to Pink Diamond before, as she believes, the Cluster will emerge, unaware that Steven had contained the superweapon months earlier. Blue Diamond expresses regret over how she should have done more, and wonders what Pink Diamond would think of the Cluster destroying her colony. After Greg reveals himself, Blue Diamond asks her Pearl to bring Greg to her.

She then states how she is impressed by humanity's ability to survive in the wild and remarks on the irony that a fragile human can survive on Earth while a being as powerful as a Diamond can perish. When Greg tells her that he also lost someone close to him, Blue Diamond is surprised that a human can sympathize with her, and is glad that she can save Greg from the Cluster. She forcefully takes Greg and boards her ship with the goal of bringing him to Pink Diamond's Zoo.

"Adventures in Light Distortion"

Pearl and Amethyst are shocked to hear that Blue Diamond was on Earth and that she took Greg with her when she left. Pearl realizes that she may have taken him to Pink Diamond's zoo. Later, Garnet reminds Steven that Greg's kidnapping wasn't his fault, but Blue Diamond's.

"Gem Heist"

Holly Blue Agate reveals that after Pink Diamond was shattered, Blue Diamond took over her Zoo in an attempt to preserve her legacy. Blue Diamond and Holly Blue have been maintaining the Zoo since Era 2 began.

"The Zoo"

Steven reveals that he was scared when Blue Diamond took his dad.

"That Will Be All"

That Will Be All 121

Blue Diamond returns to the Zoo to mourn alongside a room full of bubbled Rose Quartzes. She is shocked to find Yellow Diamond entering the room and tells her that she just wants to cry alone. Blue Diamond listens to Yellow Diamond's song, comforts Yellow when it ends, and is greeted afterward by Holly Blue Agate and the Crystal Gems. Blue Diamond does not understand what Holly Blue means by Sapphire's "special delivery". Once Sapphire lies and tells her that she foresaw Blue Diamond requesting more humans for the zoo, Blue Diamond believes her and is sad to announce that there is limited time to retrieve more humans due to the Cluster.

"Doug Out"

While talking about how intense Steven's life can be, Connie reminds him that he snuck out of the zoo past Blue and Yellow.

"I Am My Mom"

Pearl realizes that, if Topaz and Aquamarine are kidnapping people on Earth, they must be doing so on orders from Yellow and Blue directly.

"The Trial"

The Trial 044

Blue Diamond and Yellow Diamond both act as judges for Steven's trial. Blue Diamond first appears beside Yellow Diamond after her Pearl introduces her. She wonders where Rose Quartz is, and when Yellow suggests shattering Rose just for "looking like that", Blue Diamond says she wants to hear her make her case. She also states that she wants to punish Rose for what she did to Pink Diamond.

After listening to the prosecuting Zircon's case, Steven tells the Diamonds that he shattered Pink Diamond, prompting Blue Diamond to ask Steven how he did it. Steven doesn't know how so he makes up a story, but when he brings up the Breaking Point, Blue Diamond loses her composure and causes the whole room to cry. She states that Rose shattered Pink Diamond with a sword.

The Trial 217

The court takes a short recess, after which the defending Zircon asks to use Blue Diamond's palanquin fort her argument. Blue Diamond allows this, and the defending Zircon presents evidence that shows Rose couldn't have shattered Pink Diamond, which surprises Blue Diamond. The defending Zircon unintentionally accuses the Diamonds of being behind Pink Diamond's shattering, shocking Blue Diamond. When Yellow Diamond poofs both Zircons, Blue Diamond yells at her to stop, asking her to restrain herself. The two are distracted by their argument, which allows Steven and Lars hijack her palanquin and escape through the ceiling.

"Off Colors"

Lars recounts how Yellow and Blue were furious at Steven, to which Steven explains who they are.

"Raising the Barn"

Steven tells Lapis Lazuli and Peridot about his Homeworld adventure, describing his trial in front of the Diamonds and subsequent escape in a commandeered palanquin, much to Peridot and Lapis' shock. Afraid that the Diamonds will eventually find them on Earth, Lapis leaves the planet with The Barn in tow.

"Your Mother and Mine"

Blue Diamond appears in Garnet's story of Rose Quartz, shown to assist Pink Diamond after the rebellion began. Alongside Yellow and White Diamond, she helps corrupt most of the remaining Gems on Earth at the end of the Rebellion.

"Can't Go Back"

Blue Diamond appears in Steven's dream about the Diamonds. She advises Pink Diamond to deal with the growing Rebellion on Earth shortly before the latter's assassination. After Steven informs Lapis Lazuli about his dream, she misunderstands its meaning, causing her to abandon Earth and the moon forever.

"A Single Pale Rose"

Steven has a brief flashback to "The Trial", where he remembers Blue Diamond listening to the defending Zircon's case.

Blue Diamond is indirectly mentioned by Gem War Pearl when she says "There was a bright light and everyone was – why did I do it?" The bright light refers to the light the remaining Diamonds used to corrupt the remaining rebels. She is also mentioned by Rose Quartz when talking with Pearl. Rose says "Blue and Yellow don't care! They never have!" just before turning back to Pink Diamond to fake her shattering.

"Now We're Only Falling Apart"

Blue and Yellow Diamond appear in Pearl's flashback about Pink Diamond. Pink pleads with them to spare the Earth, but they both refuse to listen, forcing her to begin the Rebellion as Rose Quartz.

"Reunited"

Reunited (474)

Blue and Yellow Diamond arrive on Earth during Garnet's wedding intending to awaken the Cluster. While Yellow Diamond is busy fighting the Cluster, Blue Diamond lands on the beach and engages in combat with the Crystal Gems. After a brief fight, Blue easily overpowers all of them using her emotional powers. Connie, unaffected by Blue's powers, attacks her with Rose's sword, but Blue Diamond is able to stop the attack, breaking the sword in the process.

Garnet is able to fight through the sadness, confronting Blue Diamond and reminding her of the last time they met. Garnet grabs onto Blue Diamond's skirt and complains about her special day being ruined, which Blue Diamond is confused by. However, Garnet reveals that she was just trying to keep Blue Diamond from moving out of the way. She looks up to see Lapis Lazuli above, who then proceeds to drop the barn on top of her.

Blue Diamond reemerges from the rubble, surprised to see that Lapis is immune to her sadness. Lapis keeps Blue Diamond chained with water, but she's able to break free and continue her fight against the Crystal Gems. Peridot distracts her by hanging onto her face, which allows Lapis time to throw the rest of the Crystal Gems towards Blue Diamond with her hydrokinesis. Steven's final attack knocks her over, and as the Cluster wins against Yellow Diamond, Blue is crushed by both of their ships.

Reunited (934)

Yellow Diamond lifts Blue's ship off of her, as the two prepare to face off against the Crystal Gems. After Yellow knocks Steven unconscious, Blue Diamond continues to fight the Gems, thinking about not matter how much she makes them suffer, she will never be able to see Pink again. She feels a presence near her, and she and Yellow begin to defend against it. However, when they recognize it as Pink Diamond, they cease their fighting, realizing Steven is the source of the aura.

"Legs From Here to Homeworld"

Legs From Here to Homeworld 009

Blue Diamond hugs Steven, crying tears of joy and relief after finding out that Pink Diamond was not shattered. This causes the surrounding Gems to cry tears as well, which Pearl explains to Connie to be one of her powers. After questioning Steven, Yellow Diamond asks Blue to stop crying, as it's affecting her vision. Blue Diamond becomes distraught, revealing that the Diamonds thought the Corrupting Light destroyed the Gems on Earth.

Steven and the Crystal Gems take Blue and Yellow to the Ancient Gem Colony Ship to show them a Corrupted Gem. He encourages the Diamonds to attempt to heal the Corrupted Gem, and with their combined powers, they're able to temporarily restore Nephrite. However, once they let go of her, Nephrite returns to her Corrupted form. When Yellow Diamond suggests that White Diamond would be needed to completely reverse Corruption, Blue becomes fearful and says that they can't let her see the Corrupted Gems.

When Steven expresses a desire to speak to White Diamond, Blue tells him that she doesn't think he'll have luck with that, as she reveals White hasn't left Homeworld in eons. He takes them along with Lion to Rose's Landfill, where Yellow and Blue are confused that he doesn't know what Pink's leg ship looks like. After he accidentally activates it, they return to Beach City as Blue and Yellow will let Steven tell Greg and Connie tell her parents that they're going to Gem Homeworld before to prepare for launch.

Legs From Here to Homeworld 308

In the ship, Blue cries about how long it's been since they've flown in Pink's ship. She stops crying after Yellow reminds her of the effect it has on other Gems. During their flight in hyperspace, Blue tells Steven that White can be difficult.

After landing, Blue and Yellow decide to see White Diamond first in an attempt to soften the blow, but they're interrupted by White Pearl, who requests Pink Diamond's presence. When Blue and Yellow attempt to accompany Steven, White Pearl says that only Pink Diamond is necessary and takes Steven away without them.

"Familiar"

Familiar 172

Blue Diamond sends her Pearl to retrieve Steven for her, who finds her combing her hair with Comby. She's delighted to see Steven, who joins her in the pool with cannonball. Blue remarks that Steven is silly and small, admitting she's happy that Pink is back and calling Steven by his name. When Steven comments on this, Blue states that it's a funny name and that Pink is very creative.

She asks Steven if he remembers the game they used to play, and Steven apologizes that he doesn't. Blue tells him that Pink used to stand at the bottom of the water and sing, while the rest of the Diamonds would sit above the surface and try to guess what she was singing. Blue reveals that they haven't been in the pool together since Era 2 started, as they were saddened by Pink's empty place. Blue Pearl arrives to remind her Diamond of her next appointment, and as Blue leaves the pool, the water drains after her.

Later, while going through Pink Diamond's old room, Steven finds some of Pink's old drawings. One of these depicts the Diamonds without Pink, in which Blue Diamond looks sad. In the drawing with Pink, Blue appears to be smiling.

"Together Alone"

When Steven presents the idea of throwing another ball, Blue is delighted by the prospect and suggests it could be the start of Era 3. She offers her and Yellow's Pearls to help him set up the ball, expecting it to be grand since White is going to be there.

Together Alone 174

Blue checks in on Steven's progress on the ball, appearing annoyed that Steven isn't going to change his form. When he states that he wants the rest of the Crystal Gems to come, Blue separates him from them and states that they need to present their best selves for White. She says that Pearl and Steven's "pet" (Connie) will be allowed, but Amethyst will need Limb Enhancers and Garnet must unfuse. She mocks Garnet's name as well as the idea of her entering with other Garnets. When Steven doesn't know what it means to ring in the ball, Blue takes the Pearls and tells him she'll take care of it.

At the ball, Blue is presented by her Pearl. She tells Steven that he's doing a great job. She sits on her throne as the ball continues, but becomes outraged when Steven and Connie accidentally fuse into Stevonnie. She is disappointed as Stevonnie is thrown into the tower.

"Escapism"

Steven, in the body of a Watermelon Steven, draws a picture of events on Homeworld in the sand that includes Blue Diamond.

"Change Your Mind"

Change Your Mind 028

While sleeping, Steven experiences of one of Pink Diamond's past imprisonments, and sees Blue Diamond enter the tower to chastise Pink for her latest breach of conduct. Following the incident where the organic creatures Pink brought into the ballroom were now running loose through the Palace, Blue radiated her pathogenetic aura and warned her that if she didn't start acting as she should, White would take her Pearl away.

Waking up in the present, Steven and Connie sees Blue enter the tower and chastise him in an identical manner. Steven attempts to get through to Blue Diamond, but his efforts result in her firing an energy blast at him. Steven then asks Blue how many times she made Pink Diamond cry. Despite denying it at first, Blue realizes how many times she actually did, and realizes why Pink left. Having a change of heart, Blue realizes that she always thought that Pink was failing Homeworld, but if Pink was happier on Earth, then Homeworld was failing her.

Change Your Mind 215

Blue then brings Steven and Connie to Pink's room, where Steven changes back into his old clothes, and then to Yellow Diamond's bubble chamber so they can retrieve the bubbled Crystal Gems. Yellow attempts to get Blue to return "Pink and her pet" back to the prison tower, and when Blue refuses and accepts Steven as his own being, the two fight and Yellow attempts to poof Blue. Steven stops her and makes her realizes the error of her ways, and Blue comforts Yellow after the latter breaks down in tears.

Blue and Yellow attempt to help Steven and Connie escape Homeworld, only to be stopped by White Pearl, controlled by White Diamond, who merges White's head ship with Pink's leg ship. Despite this, Blue and Yellow's repaired ships, controlled by Bismuth, Peridot, and Lapis, manage to punch White's ship away. Steven then encourages Blue and Yellow to talk to White, and even after they express how miserable they are under her rule, White mind controls them and they transport inside her ship.

Change Your Mind 640

Blue and Yellow later reappear after the Crystal Gems have entered White's ship, where White remarks that Blue thinks she needs Pink. After White pulls out Steven's gemstone and it morphs into a pink version of Steven, Blue aids White and the other Gems she's controlling in blasting Pink Steven, but it fails and she is knocked down. She later blushes pink when White and the other Gems she's controlling do the same and is then freed from White's control once White is defeated.

Change Your Mind 998

When White reaches out to them, Blue turns her head away as Yellow remarks that White is "off-color" due to her pink blush. Blue later travels to Earth alongside the other Diamonds and is introduced to the Off-Colors. She also suggests using Pink/Rose's fountain to channel the Diamonds' powers onto the Corrupted Gems to heal them. After this is successful, Blue returns to Homeworld alongside Yellow and White, bidding farewell to Steven and the Crystal Gems.

Steven Universe: The Movie

Two years later, in a transmission to Gems across the universe, White Diamond tells the story of Pink Diamond, which includes Blue. White recounts Steven reuniting with the Diamonds and founding Era 3. When Steven rejects Pink Diamond's throne, Blue becomes confused and begs him to stay after White has the feed cut. The Diamonds sing "Let Us Adore You" together, where they beg Steven to stay on Homeworld with them. Blue reminds him that she never shatters or makes anyone cry anymore. However, he ends up leaving them to return to Earth.

As Pearl regains her memories, White, Yellow, and Blue are depicted giving her to Pink Diamond. Blue Diamond is later seen in Spinel's flashback to her time with Pink Diamond, giving Pink the news that she will be receiving her own colony.

SU Movie 1942

Without Steven, the Diamonds decide to move to Earth so they can spend more time with him. Upon their arrival, though, they discover that Beach City is in disrepair. When White comments on this, Blue mentions that they aren't judging, and White continues that judging based on appearances is bad. Steven then reintroduces the Diamonds to Spinel, who they are immediately smitten by. They decide to take Spinel back to live with them on Homeworld, singing "Let Us Adore You (Reprise)" as they return to their ship and fly away.

"Little Homeschool"

Blue and the other Diamonds are featured on the cover of the "Era 3 & Me!" pamphlet.

"In Dreams"

Blue Diamond appears in Steven's dream as a dolphin.

"Growing Pains"

When recalling traumatic events from his childhood, Steven thinks about Blue Diamond interrogating him under the impression he was Rose Quartz, as well as Blue using her emotional powers on him after he was thrown in the tower.

"Homeworld Bound"

Homeworld Bound 095

Having run away to Homeworld, Yellow Diamond sends Steven and Spinel to Blue, as she believes Blue will be able to help him feel better. Blue explains to Steven that when she decided she wanted to bring joy to others, her tears evaporated and turned into clouds that bring happiness to all who touch them.

Blue encourages Steven to try her clouds, and he ends up indulging her as she sings "My Little Reason Why" to him and Spinel. However, as her song ends, Steven begins to feel as though he doesn't deserve happiness and falls from his cloud. Blue decides to send him towards White Diamond, believing her to be better equipped to handle issues of self worth.

As Steven flees from White's chamber, he passes by Blue and Yellow. Spinel and the Diamonds follow him, begging him to stay and let them help him. Blue tells him that they're his family, but Steven apologizes and warps back to Earth.

"I Am My Monster"

I Am My Monster 125

Blue Diamond crying over the thought of being responsible for Steven's suffering from the Diamonds.

Blue Diamond, alongside the other Diamonds and Spinel, travels to Earth in order to check on Steven and return his sandal. After seeing Steven in his monstrous form, the Diamonds are shocked with Blue Diamond wondering if he is corrupted. The Diamonds all try using their new powers to help Steven, but to no avail. Despite previously stating she won't cry again, Blue Diamond starts to cry, remarking how Steven's suffering is the fault of the Diamonds' doings.

I Am My Monster 200

Blue happily watches on Steven.

After an inspirational speech by Connie, Garnet plans for everyone to work together in order to show Steven how much everyone cares for him. Blue Diamond's job is to use her new cloud powers to lift Pearl, Amethyst and Greg up and carry them over the ocean towards Steven. After the Crystal Gems' attempt to calm Steven down proves to be effective, Blue Diamond engages in a group hug, making Steven turn back to his normal self. With Steven resting and crying on top of the Cluster's hand, everyone gathers around him, relieved he is back to his normal self.

Abilities

Being a Diamond, Blue Diamond is one of the most powerful Gems in the entire Gem Empire, who demonstrated the ability to take on the Crystal Gems by herself. She possesses standard Gem abilities: bubbling, shapeshifting, fusion, regeneration, agelessness, gravity shifting, photokinesis, gem storage, and superhuman strength/durability, but since she is a Diamond, the abilities are expected to be much greater than usual. In "Reunited", she is noted to have astounding mental strength. In general, while she doesn't have hydrokinesis most of her abilities are framed as aquatic in nature, from her tears to her "clouds" to the water-like appearance of her aura.

Skillset

  • Spaceship Piloting: Blue Diamond has a spaceship only she is capable of controlling with her left hand, until it was repaired by Bismuth, Peridot, and Lapis Lazuli. She is able to use the ship in combat.

Natural Abilities

  • Immense Strength:
    Change Your Mind 214

    Blue Diamond fighting Yellow Diamond

Due to how large she is, Blue Diamond is extremely strong, she is able to lift humans and gems, such as Greg and Peridot, with ease. She was also able to break Rose's sword with just the snap of her fingers and throw the barn off of her in a fit of rage. Most impressively, she was able to match Yellow Diamond in physical strength.
  • Immense Durability:
    Barn falling

    Blue Diamond durability

Blue Diamond seems to have extreme durability, as after the Crystal Gems literally threw themselves at her, and she was hit by Pearl, Amethyst, Garnet, Bismuth, Lion's sonic roar, and Steven's spiked bubble, she fell onto her knees, but quickly recovered, and seemingly suffered minimal damage from being crushed first under a barn and then her own warship. In addition, she is able to resist Yellow Diamond's electrokinesis for several seconds, while other Gems would have poofed immediately upon being hit by it. This is likely due to her sharing the same invulnerable nature as her gem, much as how Peridot's gem type gives her extreme durability.
  • Enhanced Speed: As seen in "I Am My Monster", Blue Diamond is just as fast as Yellow Diamond, who is remarkably fast.

Unique Abilities

  • Aura Projection:
    Reunited (610)

    Blue Diamond's aura

The Diamonds can project an aura around them that they can control; they can either radiate it from their entire bodies or emit it from specific parts of their bodies (i.e., their hands). Blue's aura is blue and has water-like properties (evident by allowing her to make gems cry). Though intangible, Blue was able to break Lapis' water chains from her hands upon coating her hands with her aura. She can use this as an offensive ability in both the physical and mental plane, as seen when she was able to focus her aura and attack Steven as he was astral projecting.
    • Sadness Inducement:
      Blue Diamond Blue Sadness

Blue Diamond's powers, activated by a surge of emotion.

Blue Diamond can engulf a large area with her aura, causing any Gem or Half-Gem within its reach to be overwhelmed with intense feelings of sadness and cry uncontrollably, even affecting Yellow Diamond to a limited degree. Blue Diamond seems to activate this ability involuntary whenever she is shedding tears in an emotional state (e.g. joy or nostalgia), albeit to a lesser degree since she doesn't radiate her blue aura during these instances. When she weaponized her grief over Pink Diamond's supposed death, she instantly rendered the Crystal Gems unable to fight, also splitting all but the most stable Gem fusions that got caught in her aura apart, as Alexandrite came undone as soon as she was affected, while Garnet remained whole. The level of resistance to the ability varies, specifically regarding non-Gems: after being engulfed by Blue's aura, Connie did kneel in tears with the rest of the Gems, despite her not being affected by it the first time (she's also immune to it in the following episode); Lion was apparently impervious to its effects, but whether this was due to his revival by Rose Quartz is unknown; Lapis Lazuli, having undergone extreme emotional trauma, was seen resisting the aura's effect and barely shed a tear upon being affected.
    • Corruption Induction: Though the attack was meant to obliterate the Crystal Gems on Earth after Pink's supposed shattering, Blue, Yellow, and White Diamond's collective powers instead corrupted the remaining Gems on Earth.
      • Corruption Reversal: Along with Pink/Steven, White, and Yellow Diamond, Blue Diamond has the ability to reverse the effects of the Corrupting Light on Gems. However, it is implied that this is only temporary without the power of all four Diamonds. The four reversed the corruption on the water of Rose's Fountain in "Change Your Mind".
    • Psychic Resistance: Blue Diamond's aura shields her from telepathic abilities through the sheer intensity of her thoughts, even without her own awareness. This includes Steven's (and to extension Pink Diamond's) astral projection, as seen when she briefly repelled Steven, though this resistance doesn't extend to White Diamond's mind control.
      • Psychic Blast: While on the mental plane, Blue Diamond can fire her aura as a beam which induces profound distress on the target; however, despite combining her assault with Yellow Diamond's, it was repelled by Steven's own aura.
      • Psychic Detection: Blue Diamond is also able to locate others on the mental plane when they aren't in physical contact with her, such as Steven.
  • Energy Projection:
    Blue Diamond attack

    Blue Diamond's energy projection.

    Whats the use of feeling

    Blue Diamond's Energy Construction

Blue Diamond is shown to have some form of energy projection power that she uses for battle. The energy can be molded into different projectiles, from spheres to a hail of lasers, or combinations thereof. Once Blue Diamond broke free of Lapis water chains, she was able to create a ball of stellar light and it was able to shoot out blasts and explosions. She was able to form large spheres of energy dense enough to physically push back Yellow Diamond and summon one powerful enough to cause Yellow Diamond to cry in pain after being struck with it.
  • Cloud Generation: In "Homeworld Bound", Blue Diamond is shown to be able to create clouds from, according to herself, her evaporated tears. Gems are able to ride these clouds.
    • Joy Inducement: When a Gem touches a cloud, they feel joy, which resembles the opposite of Blue's crying inducement. Blue uses them to try to help Steven feel better, though she is ultimately unsuccessful.

Clandestine Abilities

  • White Capsule Generation: While controlled by White Diamond, Blue Diamond can create a kind of white capsule around itself or other gems, with several utilities.
    • Levitational Transport: The capsule can also float around, as seen in "Change Your Mind".
    • Teleportation: The capsule can also teleport Blue Diamond, as seen in "Change Your Mind".
  • Levitation: While controlled by White Diamond, Blue Diamond has the ability to, indirectly, suspend her body.
  • Optical White Burst: While controlled by White Diamond, Blue Diamond is capable of emitting a sudden blast of white energy (equivalent to White Diamond's aura) from both her eyes. Those hit by this energy are then linked to White Diamond's hive mind and under her total mental control.

Relationships

Yellow Diamond

Didn't we hurt Pink!? She was suffering in silence for ages! Just like our Gems! Just like me! And I know you're suffering in silence, too!

—Blue Diamond, "Change Your Mind"
That Will Be All 148

Blue comforting Yellow in one of her rare moments of weakness.

Due to their roles as the Gem matriarchs, Blue and Yellow Diamond treat each other with respect, considering themselves equals. However, Pink Diamond's shattering is a source of friction between them, as Yellow and Blue Diamond have been arguing for thousands of years over their different ways of coping with the loss of Pink Diamond. Despite their differing beliefs, they still care about each other, as when Yellow nearly broke down after singing "What's the Use of Feeling (Blue)?", Blue comforted her by placing a hand on her back. Similarly, Yellow and Blue are holding each other when they enter the trial room, and Yellow places her hands on Blue's shoulders when she breaks down at the trial.

The Trial 228

Blue yelling at Yellow for attacking the Zircons.

Their attitude toward legal matters suits their roles as overruling authority figures. Yellow Diamond is a militant, considering trials as pointless and would prefer unhesitating action while Blue Diamond prefers to hear every opinion possible to determine the best possible decision even through slow, lengthy processes. When Yellow Diamond is outraged by the fact that the defending Zircon accused one of the Diamonds of Pink Diamond's shattering, she poofs both of the Zircons, which makes Blue Diamond angry, yelling at her fellow Diamond "Can't you restrain yourself!?"

In "Reunited", when trying to explain he has Pink Diamond's gem to Yellow and Blue Diamond, Steven claims that Yellow, Blue, and Pink see/saw each other as family.

After discovering that Pink was never shattered, Blue and Yellow seem to have become slightly closer, as their different ways of coping with Pink's death have become irrelevant. Blue encourages patience in Yellow, and Yellow comforts Blue when she becomes upset at the mention of White Diamond.

Change Your Mind 275

Blue holding Yellow after the latter breaks down in tears.

Blue knows that despite acting otherwise, Yellow is every bit as miserable with her role in Homeworld as she is. When Blue decides to help Steven and Connie return to Earth, Yellow tells her to return them to the prison tower. Blue refuses, and the two engage in a physical fight that results in Yellow attempting to poof Blue. Steven stops her and makes her realize just how much her actions have hurt Blue and Pink, the two people she cares about most. Yellow breaks into tears as Blue comforts her. The two later work together to help Steven escape Homeworld, and are later seen having fun together along with White at Rose's fountain.

Pink Diamond

Oh, Pink. I'm sorry... I'm so sorry... I should've done more. Yellow says it'll all be over soon. I wonder what you would think. This is your planet, after all. I still think it is.

—Blue Diamond, "Steven's Dream"
Steven's Dream 176

Blue Diamond paying her respects at Pink Diamond's Palanquin.

Blue Diamond describes her past relationship with Pink Diamond as a very close one. Pink would often try to lift her spirits by doing things Blue described as "silly." She was frustrated that Pink tended to show little regard for Homeworld's strict societal norms, though she made an effort to bend the rules for her sake. She grieved for her thousands of years after she believes Rose Quartz to have shattered her. In his dreams, Steven saw Pink Diamond's abandoned Palanquin where Blue Diamond knelt down and wept over her passing, which led him and Greg to seek out the location and find Blue Diamond there. Blue Diamond cares deeply about protecting Pink Diamond's legacy, causing her to take Greg to Pink Diamond's Zoo so that one more human can be saved before the Cluster destroys the Earth. Following Pink Diamond's shattering, Blue Diamond took over operations of the Zoo in an additional attempt to keep her memory alive, where she preserved all the remaining Rose Quartz gemstones in bubbles, contrary to Yellow Diamond's wishes, due to Pink Diamond's role in inventing the Gem type.

You must understand. You... are a Diamond. Everyone on this planet is looking to you. You don't even have to do anything. Just smile, and wave. Show everyone you are unfazed by this little uprising. Your gems will fall into line, and these Crystal Gems will be no more. As long as you are there to rule, this colony will be completed.

—Blue Diamond, "Can't Go Back"
CantGoBack479

Blue scolding Pink for coming up with excuses to spare the Earth.

During the events of "The Trial", Blue Diamond reveals that she's been wondering how Rose Quartz was able to get past all of Pink Diamond's attendants and shatter her in the first place. Because of this, she asks Steven (who she believes is Rose) how he committed the act, and becomes distraught when he doesn't know; nothing adds up. Blue Diamond appears very interested in the idea of an authority figure shattering Pink Diamond and is completely shocked when the defending Zircon states that it could have been one of the other Diamonds.

Despite loving Pink in a familial way, Blue Diamond tended to disregard her opinions rather than acknowledge her as an equal in the Great Diamond Authority. During their time together on Homeworld, Pink would often be locked in a tower whenever she did anything Blue could not overlook and was often brought to tears by Blue's pathogenetic aura as further punishment. It is shown in "Can't Go Back" that Blue treated Pink like a child, telling her to stop coming up with excuses and forbidding her from arguing back while at the same time reassuring her it will all be fine because of her status. When Pink Diamond made a plea to call off the colonization of Earth in order to preserve the lives of its natives, Blue Diamond had the Zoo built for her to preserve select specimens instead. Blue and Yellow Diamonds' stubborn refusal to halt colonization efforts eventually led to Pink Diamond herself responding with rebellion under the alias of Rose Quartz.

In "Reunited", when trying to explain he has Pink Diamond's gemstone to Yellow and Blue Diamond, Steven claims that Yellow, Blue, and Pink saw each other as family. After discovering Pink's true fate, Blue comes to believe Steven is her and treats him more kindly as a result. Though she was initially still trying to force Homeworld's way of life onto him, Steven managed to confront her and make her realize how abusive she was towards Pink whenever she went against Homeworld's ideals in "Change Your Mind", and she made up for it by helping Steven get back home.

Steven Universe

I never shatter, I never make anyone cry.

—Blue Diamond, Steven Universe: The Movie
Steven facing Blue Diamond

Blue glaring at Steven furiously.

Even before she knew of his existence, Steven made an empathetic connection with Blue Diamond that allowed him to feel her grief as she mourned at the palanquin of Pink Diamond. This behavior may be the result of feedback between Steven's empathy and Blue Diamond's own pathogenesis. He also overhears her conversation with Yellow Diamond on how to cope with Pink Diamond's shattering, which made him feel even more sympathy for her.

Legs From Here to Homeworld 003

Blue hugging Steven in "Legs From Here to Homeworld".

Upon meeting Steven in "The Trial" when he is claiming to be Rose Quartz, she feels nothing but scorn and wants to inflict the worst punishment possible upon him. Despite this, however, she shows restraint and mercy, even going as far as to host a trial to gather the information on how "Rose" shattered Pink Diamond before his sentence. During the trial, Blue Diamond showed frustration and grief afterward when Steven incorrectly recounted Rose Quartz's crime and showed shock at the revelation of a Diamond possibly being responsible.

Familiar 179

Blue and Steven in the pool.

However, as of "Reunited", she is finally aware that Rose Quartz is actually Pink Diamond and was never shattered in the first place. During the aftermath, she shows a genuine display of affection towards him by nuzzling him and hugging him. She also supports his efforts to cure the Corrupted Gems and expresses concern for him when he is brought to White Diamond.

In "Familiar", she is delighted to see him again, noticing that he hasn't changed, and briefly manages to call him "Steven" before returning to calling him "Pink", remarking the former is a funny name.

In "Together Alone", she attempts to discourage Steven from allowing the Crystal Gems to his "Era 3" ball but relents after he insists that they come.

Change Your Mind 138

Blue decides to help Steven return to Earth.

She visits Steven in the prison tower after he is imprisoned there for fusing with Connie and attempts to get him to apologize. When he refuses and attempts to reason with her, Blue instead attacks him with an energy blast. He does, however, manage to get her to realize just how many times she has made Pink cry, and Blue agrees to help him return to Earth, even fighting Yellow to do so.

Blue Diamond was the first Diamond to make an effort to call Steven by his name instead of Pink like the rest of the Diamonds, although it's not entirely clear if she fully understands that Steven isn't Pink.

During the time elapsed until the events of Steven Universe: The Movie, Blue, like Yellow and White, shows that she has become very attached to Steven, asking him to live with them at Homeworld in commemoration of Pink's legacy. She, along with the rest of the Diamonds, have confirmed they acknowledge Steven is not Pink Diamond yet they express a deep and almost overbearing love for him, as he reminds them so much of Pink.

In "Homeworld Bound", she expresses gratitude towards Steven for changing her and Homeworld for the better, and calls out to him when he flees, telling him the Diamonds are his family. However, in "I Am My Monster", Blue Diamond believes that she and the other Diamonds are the cause of Steven's suffering.

White Diamond

White, we used to be close. Don't you remember? When Pink would make us laugh. All those silly things she did for no reason. There was a reason. She wanted us to be happy together. But we weren't. And we're still not. I know my purpose isn't to be happy. But I find it harder and harder to enforce your rules when they make me miserable. When they make us all miserable.

—Blue Diamond, "Change Your Mind"
Change Your Mind 998

Blue laughing and playing with White.

Blue Diamond seems to be afraid of White Diamond; she claims she is difficult to talk to and please. She reminisces to Steven of how much fun the four Diamonds used to have together in the days when Pink was still with them, indicating that White used to be closer to her fellow Diamonds than she is now. Blue and White appear to be close again after repairing their relationship along with Yellow, with White even smiling at Blue after she makes a remark.

Spinel

♫ My little reason why
I'll never make you cry ♫

—Blue Diamond, "Homeworld Bound"
Homeworld Bound 114

Blue Diamond, along with the rest of the Diamonds, met Spinel long ago when she was given to Pink Diamond as a playmate. Blue Diamond herself regards Spinel as one of Pink's lost treasures upon meeting her again and expressing sympathy for her after Steven informs them that Pink left Spinel alone on a floating garden in space. Upon White Diamond's suggestion that they take Spinel back with them to Homeworld, Blue immediately agrees, calling Spinel adorable and how she is so much like Pink, and Spinel happily accepts the Diamonds as her new friends.

In "Homeworld Bound", she is shown to be very affectionate towards Spinel, being incredibly loving to her, and also inducing happiness onto her. Spinel is shown to sit in Blue Diamond's hair in "I Am My Monster", exemplifying their close relationship.

Blue Pearl

My Diamond allows me to draw during court proceedings.

—Blue Pearl, "Together Alone"
The Answer 121

Blue Diamond has her own Pearl, assumed to be her servant. Not much is known about her, in part due to her quiet nature, but in "Steven's Dream", she exhibits great loyalty and respect towards her Diamond and follows her every command, only speaking herself when addressed. She also introduces Blue Diamond in "The Trial". According to Blue Pearl, Blue Diamond lets her draw during court proceedings, something that she enjoys doing, which may indicate that Blue Diamond cares for her.

Following the start of Era 3, Blue Pearl no longer serves Blue Diamond due to Steven establishing new rules for the Gem Empire.

Sapphire

Thank you, Sapphire. That's all I needed to know.

—Blue Diamond, "The Answer"
The Answer 048

Sapphire telling Blue Diamond of the future events in "The Answer" flashback.

Sapphire was once an aristocratic member of Blue Diamond's court who was valued dearly for her ability to see into the future. She appeared to talk frequently with her, by Sapphire's words. When Blue Diamond sentenced Ruby to be shattered just for fusing with her, however, Sapphire immediately fled the scene with Ruby and terminated her relationship with Blue Diamond. After meeting again over 5,000 years later in "That Will Be All", Blue Diamond initially does not recognize Sapphire as the same one from the Cloud Arena. When Garnet refuses to attend Steven's ball in "Together Alone" Blue Diamond remarks that Sapphire has some sense.

Ruby

I can't believe all that stuff about Blue Diamond being merciful! She's a shatterer! She yelled at Sapphire! She hates fusion a-and love!

—Ruby, "Gem Heist"

To Blue Diamond, Ruby is nothing more than one of the common and insignificant soldiers under her command. When Ruby accidentally fuses with Sapphire, Blue Diamond immediately decides to shatter her gemstone as a punishment, even though the unexpected fusion saved Sapphire from the rebel attack. Like Sapphire, after meeting her again over 5,000 years later in "That Will Be All", Blue Diamond does not recognize Ruby as the one who fused with a member of her court.

Garnet

Garnet? Does that call herself a Garnet?

—"Together Alone"
Reunited (570)

Garnet grabbing Blue Diamond's cloak as a distraction from Lapis Lazuli.

Blue Diamond dislikes Garnet due to being a fusion of two different types of gems. After seeing her form for the first time she was angry and disgusted at the fusion, sentencing one of her components to execution. After recognizing her again in "Reunited" she is shown to still hold a grudge against Garnet for disrupting her court and fights her along with the other Crystal Gems. However, after finding out that Rose was Pink Diamond, Blue Diamond has stopped being openly hostile to Garnet, though she continues to show disdain for her.

In "Together Alone", Blue was surprised to hear Steven refer to Garnet by her name and arrogantly made fun of the idea, sarcastically asking if Steven expected Garnet to "enter with the Demantoids, the Hessonites, the Pyropes?".

In "Change Your Mind", however, Blue is willing to help Garnet and the other Crystal Gems return to Earth upon being convinced that Pink Diamond is happier there. Their enmity has ended by the time of "I Am My Monster", in which they work together to save Steven. They also share a common view that Steven is their family.

Greg Universe

I'm surprised that a human being is capable of understanding how I feel.

—Blue Diamond, "Steven's Dream"
Steven's Dream 207

Greg comforting Blue about her loss.

Upon encountering Blue Diamond mourning by Pink Diamond's Palanquin, Greg approached her, and the two started talking. In their conversation, they were able to form a connection through their shared understanding of the loss of a loved one, with Blue Diamond and Greg missing Pink Diamond and Rose Quartz respectively (which, in an ironic twist of events, turned out to be the same person). However, Blue Diamond later resolved to kidnap Greg as a last resort to honor Pink Diamond's memory and took him away in her spaceship. Blue Diamond found it surprising that a human could not only understand her pain but also relate to it.

In "I Am My Monster", Greg refused to heed Amethyst's order to get out, because "every time Gem stuff happens I ran the other way", and he said it was right to feel angry because he didn't protect Steven; Blue Diamond told him he didn't protect him from them.

Connie Maheswaran

Blue; You can bring your Pearl of course, and your pet.
Steven: Uh, pet?
Connie: I think she means me.

—"Together Alone"
Change Your Mind 141

Blue decides to help Steven and Connie return to Earth.

Blue Diamond regards Connie, as a human, to be of little importance. She recognizes the sword Connie carries in "Reunited" and breaks it in anger. Later in "Together Alone", she assumes that Connie is Pink Diamond's "pet". However, in "Change Your Mind", their relationship seems to have improved, as Blue attempts to help Connie and Steven return to Earth, and Connie encourages Blue and Yellow to talk to White.

Holly Blue Agate

This facility originally belonged to Pink Diamond and houses and staffs the otherwise useless Quartzes she produced on what was her colony. But Blue Diamond and her trusted Agate - that's me - have been maintaining this place since the dawn of Era 2.

—Holly Blue Agate, "Gem Heist"

While the full extent of their relationship is unknown, it can be assumed that she trusts Holly Blue, as she gave her supervision over the Zoo. Since Blue treats anything related to Pink Diamond with the utmost care, the fact that she trusted Holly Blue with the Zoo shows the amount of trust Blue Diamond has in her.

Lapis Lazuli

A Lapis Lazuli? Does every Gem that comes in contact with this planet turn traitor?!

—Blue Diamond, "Reunited"

When Lapis arrived to help the Crystal Gems fight the Diamonds in "Reunited", Blue Diamond recognized her and acted with surprise overseeing Lapis Lazuli betraying Homeworld, before projecting her aura at her. She is then shocked by how her pathokinesis barely fazes Lapis, who chains her with her hydrokinesis. In "Change Your Mind" Blue Diamond doesn't seem hostile towards Lapis as they and the rest of the gems are trying to convince White Diamond to change her ways.

Pink Pearl

It's White's Pearl.

—"Legs From Here to Homeworld"

Prior to Pink Pearl's re-assignment as White Pearl, Blue Diamond warned Pink Diamond that if she keeps up her misbehavior, White Diamond will take Pink Pearl away from her. Blue Diamond appears to be intimidated by White Pearl, alerting Yellow to her presence. When White Pearl, controlled by White Diamond, orders Blue, Yellow, Steven and Connie to go to their rooms, Blue asks her what rooms they should go to, implying she sees White Pearl as not her own being, but an extension of White Diamond.

Stevonnie

Pink, this is completely unacceptable! Unfuse or I'll make you!

—"Together Alone"

Blue Diamond, along with Yellow Diamond, showed immense shock at Stevonnie, telling them to unfuse immediately. She was then seen crying in disappointment from them after Yellow poofed the Jades' fusion, Garnet and Opal.

Trivia

Blue Diamond's mural.

  • Pure diamond is a colorless and transparent crystal lattice formed by carbon atoms, while the coloring of blue diamonds is caused by boron impurities (that are also of a higher volume than possible nitrogen impurities).
  • Blue Diamond is the first of the Diamonds to be seen on-screen in an episode of Steven Universe.
    • However, Blue Diamond was not the first of the Diamonds to be revealed in Steven Universe media as a whole. The extended theme song reveals Yellow Diamond.
  • Rebecca Sugar has mentioned that blue-colored Gems are mainly diplomats.[2]
  • Rebecca stated that Blue Diamond's character design is meant to look "ghostly" to get the feeling of her mourning, and draws much influence from Martha Graham's Lamentation ballet dance, along with Fruma Sarah from Fiddler on the Roof.[3] Her face and hair designs are also inspired by Leiji Matsumoto's art, to make her come across as a "strange presence".[4]
  • According to her mural, Blue Diamond ruled over nine planets when the Moon Base was built. It is unknown how many she currently rules.
  • Many Gems under Blue Diamond have similar gemstone designs (wider at the bottom, tapering to a point on top), reminiscent of a teardrop shape.
  • Blue Diamond's powers and personality may be symbolical to emotional abuse; abusers of this type tend to tamper and manipulate the emotions of others to make their victims sympathize with them more than they otherwise would, making them feel too guilty to leave the relationship or feel obligated to remain in it. This is supported by her highly and negatively emotional (almost to a dramatic extent) mindset, as well as the fact that her pathokinesis effectively forces her emotions onto others, typically against their will.
  • It seems that Blue Diamond wears a cloak while she is traveling and doesn't wear one when she is on Homeworld and her own places.
  • A notorious New Age scamming site, The Council of Love, utilizes the blue diamond as a symbol of the Virgin Mary,[5] which may have inspired Blue Diamond's aesthetic similarities to the figure.
  • Blue diamonds represent peace, spirituality, and good health.[6]
    • This is ironic, given that her lasting grief and mourning over Pink is far from an improvement to her well-being.
  • Blue is the only Diamond to not speak with an American accent; instead, she has an Irish accent.

Cultural References

  • Blue Diamond's appearance and her throne appear to be heavily influenced by Indian and Muslim culture. Her clothing resembles that of a traditional Arab wedding dress, specifically a Henna dress.
  • The frame of her throne has carved geometrical designs for windows, which are a common design in many Indian temples and houses.
    • The largest blue diamond, the Hope Diamond, also originates from India. It is known notoriously for supposedly being cursed, depicted to bring forth misfortune to whoever attempts to wear it.
