The city is not merely a human habitat. It is also a vital ecosystem where wildlife can find refuge and thrive. ð¦ Tartu, Estonia ðªðª is taking urban biodiversity to new heights with the Birdway, a visionary project that merges nature with city life. The unique architectural installation of the Birdway features 12 bird nesting boxes made from sustainably sourced wood. These boxes are strategically placed along a pedestrian walkway in a public park to support bird species in the green belt along the Emajõgi River. By addressing the scarcity of avian breeding grounds, the Birdway enhances both the cityâs beauty and its ecological health. ð± This project highlights the harmonious relationship between urban and natural environments. It also features local students who contributed to the construction, offering a fresh perspective on urban design. Historic urban markets are in a period of change. Many struggle to stay relevant due to competition from department stores and are in need of revitalisation to preserve their identity. The Mercado do Bolhão in Porto ðµð¹, classified as a âmonument of public interest,â is one such market, facing deterioration despite several renovation attempts since 1990. The Mercado do Bolhão project, part of the NEB Prizes 2024, aims to transform the unique building, part of the memory and identity of Portoâs people. The projectâs objective is to restore its 1914-17 Beaux-Arts structure and modernise it for todayâs needs. The project is guided by three principles: reviving the marketâs identity, updating the fresh produce experience, and reconnecting the market with the city through better accessibility, comfort, and functionality. Now, itâs thriving with a renewed sense of purpose, attracting locals and visitors alike, and celebrating the vibrant tradition of fresh markets in Porto. Would you visit the Mercado do Bolhão? Earlier today, President Ursula von der Leyen visited NEBourhoods - New European Bauhaus Lighthouse in Munich, one of the six vibrant NEB lighthouse demonstrators. This project reflects the essence of the ðªðº New European Bauhaus: creating sustainable, inclusive, and beautiful living spaces through innovation and collaboration. The ð©ðª Neuperlach district, home to 65,000 residents, is undergoing a transformation that embraces NEB valuesâreimagining residential buildings and vacant office spaces and utilising nature-based materials to build a future-proof, socially just, and environmentally friendly community. Led by the Department of Urban Planning and Building Regulation of the City of Munich, the project team is collaborating with the Technical University of Munich, the Munich University of Applied Sciences, and three architecture studios to revitalise this 50-year-old district, making it more ð± sustainable, affordable, and attractive for all citizens. #NewEuropeanBauhaus #LeadTheChange #SustainableLiving

âYes, there are problems. But we also have solutions!â Andrea Gebhard welcomed the guests to the auditorium of the Munich Urban Colab yesterday afternoon as part of our DLD Conference Nature Deep Dive. The task, she said, was to collect and replicate these solutions.  And so the project partners of Creating NEBourhoods Together presented their solutions on the topic ââReconnecting with natureâ, which we are implementing in Neuperlach for the New European Bauhaus as spaces adapted to nature and climate.  Sebastian Clark Koth kicked things off by reminding us of the value of public space and solutions that serve âpublic comfortâ. His focus is on the challenge of increasing heat stress in our cities, the urban heat island. The answer developed for Neuperlach is replicable shading architectures for places where no natural shade providers, no trees, can be planted.  Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Ludwig then presented the âvision of a Baubotanik street with tree facesâ: In contrast to technically constructed buildings, Baubotanik structures are in active exchange with their environment. They can maintain and repair themselves and change the microclimate of their immediate environment â âbuildings as treesâ.  âArchitecture needs to connectâ. With the Ecolopes research group, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Weisser is putting his idea into practice: the group developed a software plug-in that can be used to design building envelopes as habitats for various species â plants and animals alike. The prototype of a climate-adaptive and animal-friendly facade element, created together with TUM Digital Fabrication, was immediately convincing.  Prof. Dr. Thomas E. Hauck reminded us that contact with nature makes people healthier and happier, and his method of Animal-Aided Design was used in Neuperlach to create the âNisthockerâ, among other things. Their underlying approach sounds as simple as it is good: animals and plants are understood as actors in the planning process.  Marlene Stechl, on the other hand, transforms agricultural waste into high-quality building materials. As part of #NEBourhoods, she and her start-up HopfON were linked up with local companies in Neuperlach. They have now completed their first project: 14 square metres of acoustic panels made from hops have been installed in the Sustainable Living Lab NEXT MANNHEIM. Circularity is also the topic of Prof. Dr. Werner Lang and his team in Neuperlach. But what we need to change to make the transformation of our neighbourhoods a success starts much earlier: we have to move away from planning in linear structures and instead think in systems, in alternatives, from different perspectives â Design thinking. This is the key to finding sustainable solutions. Together. © NEBourhoods ðªðº Funded by the EU The views and opinions expressed are those of the author only. ð¡Spotlight on BYCATCH: In Search of Soft Borders BYCATCH is a traveling public artwork created by Abie Franklin and Daniel Hölzl in their studio in ð©ðª Berlin. Since 2022, it has been exhibited in different locations across Denmark and Germany, offering communities a unique chance to explore their connection to the environment. Commissioned by the ð©ð° Danish Municipal Government, BYCATCH encourages participants to reflect on balanceâbetween humans, nature, and our surroundings. Introducing a modular floating landscape, the project sparks dialogue on the impacts we have on each other and the world. As participants move, they affect the stability of the structure, mirroring the interconnectedness of people, their surroundings, and ð¾ natural forces. The project alludes to water pollution, shifting landmasses, and rising sea levels, emphasising the fragile balance we share with our environment.
