Blew the woofer in a 10 yr old Panasonic plasma, investigating replacement speakers (just to get 'mediocre' sound back) made a soundbar the smarter fix. But how to choose? I am old, deaf, and living on retirement income... did I mention deaf? That I really cannot hear what they're saying on TV anyway?
That was the real problem to solve and TV speakers weren't going to cut it... I wasn't after surround or Atmos or high end audio (have BAT and Vandersteen)... I just wanted to hear what was being said.
A number of soundbars have mechanisms to 'boost' vocal frequencies for older ears. I chose the Klipsch because it has a dedicated driver for voices and you can choose no / low / med / hi boost ranges to fit your preference and living space. While the Klipsch soundbar does reproduce music very, very well, if you want to hear the spoken word from the TV this thing works.
update after too many daylight hours on the couch: review title and 5 star rating intact but an update to my statement that the soundbar 'reproduces music very, very well'... as a background or music in a movie, yup, its done very well. But all those songs you've been listening to in 2-channel stereo for years simply do not sound right, esp lossless source... and its what I praised above - vocals.
Music mode is ok for background music but my humble 2c? This humble customer wants a firmware update from Onkyo that shuts off the middle and updrivers (or whatever the engineers think best) for something closer to 2-channel stereo. With all the Dolby voodoo installed, you'd think decoding to basic 2 channel left and right would be pretty easy... but my ignorance abounds.
Indeed, one of the most important lessons learned in my working career: the farther you are away from the work, the easier it looks.
