Schibsted: changes in how we process your data

What is changing at Schibsted?

Schibsted is separating into two companies: a media company (Schibsted Media) and a publicly listed marketplaces company (Schibsted Marketplaces). This strategic change will officially take effect in June 2024, segregating our media operations — including brands like VG and Aftonbladet — from our marketplace services such as FINN, Blocket and Prisjakt.

What is the impact on services during and after the transition?

The transition period will start 10th of June 2024 and run until early 2025. During this time, you don’t need to do anything, and you will be able to use all Schibsted services as before, with the same Schibsted account. For data and choices connected to your Schibsted account (for example: choices related to how your data is used) as well as for purposes such as digital advertising, the companies will operate under a joint data controllership. This means that for those purposes, both companies are collectively responsible for making sure all privacy regulations are followed, especially making sure you can easily exercise your privacy rights. This approach ensures business continuity and technical integrity during the transition as well as, crucially, a smoother transition for you as a user.

When the transition period ends, you will continue to have access to all the services you currently use. However, if you are a user of both media (e.g. VG) and marketplace (e.g. FINN) services, you will access these services with two separate accounts provided by Schibsted Media and Schibsted Marketplaces. We will inform you well ahead if you have to take any action regarding these accounts. This change will mean that data processing responsibilities will be separately managed by each company, no longer jointly.

What is the overall impact on your personal data?

Up until now, depending on your country, Schibsted Norway/Schibsted Sweden/Schibsted Denmark/Schibsted Suomi has been the responsible data controller for your personal data. The separation means that your personal data will be managed separately under each company’s data controllership and no longer be shared between the two companies.

For users in Norway: For the Schibsted Marketplace services, Schibsted ASA will be the new controller. For the Schibsted Media services, Schibsted Media AS will be the new controller.

For users in Sweden: For the Schibsted Marketplace services, Schibsted ASA will be the new controller. For the Schibsted Media services, Schibsted News Media AB will be the new controller.

For users in Finland: For the Schibsted Marketplace services, Schibsted ASA will be the new controller. For Podme, Schibsted News Media AB will be the new controller.

For users in Denmark: Schibsted ASA will be the new controller.

However, during the transition period, both controller companies will jointly manage some of your personal data to ensure a seamless transition, particularly in areas involving digital advertising and service connectivity such as your Schibsted account.

Once the transition period is complete, each new company will independently manage the personal data relevant to its services, enhancing data protection and reducing the overall scope of data processing.

How can you manage your data rights?

Throughout the transition period, a unified privacy policy will remain in effect. You can read this policy here. You can continue to use our self-service tools to manage your data, just like you do today, including:

  • Make choices about how your activity (behavioural) data is used via the consent pop-ups accessible on all services
  • Make choices about how your account data is used via the privacy settings in your account
  • Update information in your account pages
  • Request data deletions
  • Download your data for all brands and services you use, just like you do today.

After the transition, these same tools will be available, but they will be separate for each of the two companies, via newly published privacy policies, account pages and consent pop-ups.
