A Curtain (
Description
A curtain is created with the same general process as any simple barrier. The barrier technique is activated with the incantation:
"Emerge from the darkness, blacker than darkness. Purify that which is impure." (「
Upon activation, a dark, almost liquid-like matter drips down from the sky to form the outer barrier wall in the shape of a half-sphere. The curtain changes the sky to night, provoking cursed spirits out of hiding.[1][2][3]
Anything within the barrier will be imperceivable from outside view, preventing non-sorcerers from being able to see any jujutsu or cursed spirit activity inside. They will only see the environment as it was from the moment the technique is cast. However, any sorcerer, even windows, can perceive a curtain's black outer shell from the outside.
Ordinarily, applying enough force to the outer shell of the curtain will break it, as with any barrier wall. However, curtains can also be customized with binding vows to create certain conditions. Such as trapping non-sorcerers, blocking out jujutsu sorcerers, or targeting a certain individual. For example, a curtain was used at the Goodwill Event to prevent Satoru Gojo from entering in exchange for allowing all other individuals to enter unimpeded. A side-effect of specialized curtains is that they block cellphone signals.
As with all barriers, customizing a curtain can be a complex task for a sorcerer or cursed spirit. Using binding vows in tandem with talismans can allow a proficient barrier technique user to commission highly customized barriers to other individuals. They only need to recite the incantation and channel cursed energy into the talismans.
Usage
During a mission to a cursed mansion in 2006, Satoru Gojo destroyed the building without lowering a curtain first. This incident was on the news and Gojo was punished by Masamichi Yaga for it.[4]
In 2017, Gojo began Yuta Okkotsu's first mission by lowering a curtain around a school where a cursed spirit abducted children. The privacy of the curtain allowed Yuta and Maki to operate in a controlled environment while Satoru awaited them outside.[1]
Three months later, during a mission at the abandoned Hapina Shopping Center, assistant manager Ijichi lowered a curtain over the shopping center so Yuta and Toge could exorcise the curses within it in secrecy.[5] Unbeknownst to them, Suguru Geto lowered a curtain on top of Ijichi's in order to trap the two young sorcerers.[6] Hoping to draw out Rika Orimoto, he summoned a semi-grade 1 cursed spirit using his Cursed Spirit Manipulation and ordered it to attack Yuta and Toge. After the boys exorcised the curse, Suguru dispelled his curtain and retreated.[7]
Some time later, on December 24th, Suguru lowered a curtain over Tokyo Jujutsu High in order to prevent anyone from interfering with his plans to take Rika from Yuta.[8]Panda later tore a hole in this curtain after he and Toge were teleported back to the school by Satoru to stop Suguru.[9]
In July 2018, Kiyotaka Ijichi introduced the function of curtains to Yuji Itadori during the first-year students' mission at the Eishu Detention Center before lowering one around the Juvenile Detention Center.[10]
Kenjaku guided Mahito on how to create a curtain that he used around Satozakura High School. The conditions of the curtain allowed humans with weak cursed energy to exit, but prevented them from entering.[11] The curse user also gave Juzo Kumiya a commissioned curtain to use during the Goodwill Event. This curtain had special conditions. It delayed its visual effect in exchange for its condition taking effect faster, and repelled Satoru Gojo in exchange for allowing all others unimpeded entry.[12] Hanami attacked the students inside the curtain as a diversion for Mahito's infiltration of the cursed warehouse. Kenjaku and Mahito's group would use similar methods in Shibuya but on a much grander scale.
During Mahito's battle with Kokichi Muta, Kenjaku lowered a curtain around them. A side effect of the curtain affected Mechamaru's communications. The curtains they deployed in Shibuya were commissioned with special conditions. Several were created at different, strategically timed points in the Shibuya Incident. Several of them overlapped each other with different effects. The first curtain that appeared had a 400-meter radius centered around the Tokyu Department Store and it trapped non-sorcerers. Jujutsu sorcerers and managers could move freely but all cell phone communication was blocked.[13]
Mahito attacked Meiji-Jingumae Station to create and put several transfigured humans on the subway train. Ko-Guy was given a commissioned curtain that prevented sorcerers from entering floors lower than B2F. This one was dispelled after Yuji defeated the grasshopper curse and broke the talisman. By the time Gojo was sealed, three more curtains appeared, amassing four that overlapped each other in Shibuya. Two of them trapped Gojo and non-sorcerers inside the Hikarie building and a much larger curtain prevented jujutsu sorcerers from reaching the inner city.[14]
Yuji, Megumi Fushiguro, and Takuma Ino targetted the latter curtain first. Even with his immense physical strength, Yuji couldn't put a dent in the curtain from the outside. He realized that like the curtain at Meiji-Jingumae Station, this one was kept outside the barrier to reinforce its strength through a binding vow. To create such a tough curtain, the talisman had to be placed in the most obvious spot in the city, Shibuya Tower.[15] This curtain was dispelled when Yuji and Megumi defeated Jiro Awasaka and broke all three talismans.[16]
