Iori Hazenoki (黄櫨 (はぜのき) (いおり) Hazenoki Iori?) is a character in the Jujutsu Kaisen series. He is a jujutsu sorcerer from the past who was incarnated by Kenjaku for the Culling Game. Hazenoki aligned himself with Reggie Star's group, who all serve as antagonists for the Culling Game Arc.

Appearance

Hazenoki is a slim man of relatively average height with a well-toned physique. He has long-light colored hair that reaches just past the back of his neck and round eyeballs with thick eyebrows.

The outfit Hazenoki wears consists of suspenders that hook onto his long pants that are cut very wide around the ankles. It doesn't include a shirt and Haznoki wears the suspenders across his bare chest. He leaves a little bit of space between the bottom of his pants and the thick dark boots with white lines that he sports.

Personality

As a sorcerer from a different, more violent time period, Hazenoki is a vicious, temper-prone individual who willingly engages in the brutality of the Culling Game. He has a tendency to indulge in torturing his opponents but will go all out if he feels he's being mocked.

Hazenoki's violent tendencies contrast heavily with the extremely goofy Fumihiko Takaba. Takaba constantly irritated Hazenoki even while fighting to the death. By the time Reggie perished in a separate clash, Hazenoki was frustrated enough to stop fighting Takaba altogether.[1]

Synopsis

History

Hazenoki partook in the Culling Game after being revived in the present day by incarnating through his vessel with the help of Kenjaku on the night of October 31, 2018.[2] At some point before Megumi Fushiguro and Yuji Itadori entered the Tokyo No. 1 colony, he joined Reggie Star's group of Culling Game participants and eventually gained 35 points.[3]

Culling Game Arc

Hazenoki attacked Megumi after the latter's negotiations with Reggie failed, dropping and detonating his left eye next to Megumi. After Megumi survived the initial attack, he coordinated with Reggie to launch another attack on the sorcerer using Reggie's gasoline receipts and his explosive teeth.[4] Both Hazenoki and Reggie then descended downwards where Hazenoki attempted to finish Megumi off with an explosion. However, this was prevented by the timely arrival of Takaba who yells at them for attacking Megumi.[5]

Reggie asks if Hazenoki can infer which time period the newcomer is from. Hazenoki believes it's faster to just ask and tries to do so by asking "which are you?". However, Takaba takes this as Hazenoki questioning whether he's funny or not and decides to tell a joke. Reggie and Hazenoki prepare for an attack but Takaba just says "marry me and be my wi-fi" which causes him to be silent. Takaba then proceeds to attack him.[6] Hazenoki recovers from the hit and uses the explosion from a tooth to send a severed eye flying at Takaba with great speed. Takaba uses a paper fan to deflect the eye into the air high above them before it explodes. Then he immediately closes the distance while commenting on his opponent's dangerous technique. Hazenoki attempts to intercept Takaba with a punch but Takaba parries him with his right hand to swipe Hazenoki's arm aside. This leaves Hazenoki open, allowing Takaba to hit his opponent's remaining eye with the fan and momentarily blind him. Hazenoki regenerates his left eye and clears his vision but Takaba has suddenly disappeared. Hidden behind Hazenoki in a crouched position, Takaba uses a finger gun with two hands to poke his opponent's rear end. Initially highly uncomfortable, Hazenoki's discomfort quickly turns to rage as he demands Takaba stop mocking him. However, when he turns around to yell at his playful adversary, Hazenoki is met with Takaba's foot. Takaba immediately followed up the poke with a right high kick that sends Hazenoki crashing through a patio area of a building.[7]

Takaba and Hazenoki continue to fight throughout the course of Megumi's entire battle with Reggie. Hazenoki bombs Takaba numerous times and the latest one explodes the roof of a tall building. Hazenoki jumps out of the smoke and asks if he finally ended the battle. However, Takaba comedically appears right next to him and tells him he failed but to stay sharp because his opponent is tough. Annoyed, Hazenoki throws a right punch that slips right off the back of Takaba's left shoulder, as if he were covered in lotion. Hazenoki doesn't understand how Takaba has not only survived continuous bombings but come out virtually unscathed when he should've died five times over. Furthermore, Takaba has healed from his initial injuries and it doesn't appear to be the result of reverse cursed technique. Hazenoki's thoughts on this are interrupted when his Kogane informs him that Reggie Star has been eliminated. Hazenoki is surprised and decides to end his fight with Takaba, turning around and walking away. Takaba accompanies him demanding for his points to which Hazenoki denies and tells him to stop following him and die.[8]

Later, he hears a new rule being added. On the night of November 14, when the US army attempted to abduct the sorcerers, Hazenoki was among those who avoid being captured as he sensed their arrival. He easily defeated a US soldier and upon noticing he was from foreign country wondered what they were doing here. He then recalls his conversation with Reggie about Kenjaku dropping a bomb on them and realizes what he meant.[9]

Shinjuku Showdown Arc

Hazenoki chances upon Kenjaku in the Lake Gosho Colony after the latter kills a female Culling Game player. After some banter, Kenjaku unleashes his cursed spirits on Hazenoki, intent on killing him in order to fulfil the conditions of ending the Culling Game and activate the Great Merger. Despite fighting off many of the curses, Hazenoki was ultimately caught off guard and incapacitated by smaller cursed spirits that pierced his neck, preventing him from using reverse cursed technique from the neck down. After a brief discussion about Kenjaku's true motives, Hazenoki is killed, insulting the ancient curse user before he dies.[10]

Abilities and Powers

Overall Skill: Hazenoki is an elite-level sorcerer from the past with fundamental knowledge of jujutsu and enough combat prowess to apply it in a fight. He's highly tolerant to pain, willing to frequently gouge out his own eyes and teeth to provide ammunition for his cursed technique. Reggie considers Hazenoki to be exceptionally dangerous and believes he will kill anyone who makes him angry enough to go all out.[11]

Cursed Technique

Innate Technique
Hazenoki's eye explodes Explosive Flesh: Hazenoki's innate technique allows him to remotely detonate his own body parts and use them as bombs. He generally does so by removing his eyes and teeth before using them as projectiles and exploding them on command. Using reverse cursed technique to replace his lost body parts makes it simple for Hazenoki to continue creating bombs and barrage his targets with explosions.[12](Unnamed)
Reverse Cursed Technique
Hazenoki regenerates his left eye Reverse Cursed Technique ( (はん) (てん) (じゅつ) (しき) Hanten Jutsushiki?): Hazenoki uses reverse cursed technique to replace the body parts he explodes using his innate technique. He does so fairly constantly in order to keep producing bombs in battle, a testament to his mastery over replenishing his own human flesh.[13][14]
