Tootles appears in almost all Peter Pan related material. He is described as the most humble of the Lost Boys because of his terrible luck with adventures: as soon as Tootles goes away to complete a chore or some such, bloody battles and thrilling adventures take place. Because of this, he has become accepting of his lot in life, and he is much sweeter for it.

He is the one who shoots Wendy with a bow and arrow after Tinker Bell tells them Wendy is a bird, and convinces them that killing her would bring great favor with Peter, so when the mistake is discovered, he tells Peter to kill him. However, since Wendy survives, Tootles is spared. Though he is clumsy and silly, Tootles is the first to defend Wendy when she wants to return to London. When Peter takes possession of "The Jolly Roger", Captain Hook's pirate ship, Tootles takes Mr. Smee's place as boatswain. At the end of the novel, he returns to London with Wendy and the other Lost Boys and eventually grows up to become a judge.

In Peter Pan in Scarlet, he turns into a girl because he only has daughters to borrow clothes from, and spends most of the book playing princess and dreaming about marrying Peter Pan.

Adaptations

In literature

Shelby and the Lost Boy of Misbegot Island

In the 2011 Childrens/Young Adult novel Shelby and the Lost Boy of Misbegot Island set in a different dimensional universe complete with parallel counterparts of J.M.Barrie's creations. That is first of the 1970's time period serial Mpeta and the Treasure Hunters/Further Adventures of Mpeta series. The character of Tootles is renamed as Li’l Crit who here is an escaped runaway slave child who wound up washing up on the Shores of Misbegot this reality's version of Neverland and is described as so named for he is fast as any critter and is never a quitter. With Li’l Crit and the other Misbegot Pack staying with the Simmons clan, this version of The Darling Children in Brooklyn while awaiting to be needed again by their leader Mpeta.

Nevermor

In the 2013-2015 Young Adult book series Nevermor, set in a parallel dimensional reality to Neverland complete with similarish counterparts of J.M.Barrie's characters Tootles is renamed as Toss. With Toss ending up aging into a teenager during the progress of the series, before presumably dying during the final chapter of the story-line only to be brought back as a supernatural being.

Everland

In the 2016-2018 Young Adult book series Everland On a parallel earth in a steampunk similar reality complete with another variation of Neverland set beneath the surface of the Earth; complete with facsimiles of J.M.Barrie's creations there appears to be a simile of Tootles called Gabs.

Tales of the Wendy

In the Tales of the Wendy series, Tootles was a gentle and mild mannered everlost who appears at the end of the second book The Navigator. He was assigned by Peter Pan as Captain Wendy Darling's assistant, as nothing important ever seemed to happen when Tootles was around and his presence around Wendy would thus keep her safe.

In film and television

1953 Disney film

His character is largely minimized in the 1953 Disney film Peter Pan, as he has no lines of dialogue; he wears a skunk suit in this film. However, in this version, he is often shown to have an occasional moment of brilliance; thus, making him the smartest of the Lost Boys.

Peter Pan no Bouken

In the animated Japanese anime or manga TV showPeter Pan no Bouken Tootles is only one of three of the Lost Boys to appear in this series. Usually he is the youngest of the group but here he is shown to be older than the others. With Curly here is the youngest. In contrast in how he's normally portrayed he is tall and skinny as well as being rather gloomy at times.

Peter Pan & the Pirates

In Fox's Peter Pan & the Pirates, Tootles (voiced by Chris M. Allport) wears a panda hat and his left eye is black to complement this. Since he is presumably the same age and size as Michael Darling, he acts as a brother to him.

Hook (1991)

In the 1991 film Hook Arthur Malet plays an elderly version of him. In this he's depicted a seemingly senile old man living with Wendy. At first he is shown to be looking for "[his] marbles". A grown up Peter, asks Wendy why he hasn't been put in a home. It's later revealed in the film that he is indeed a former Lost Boy, who did indeed lose his physically owned marbles, only prior to leaving Neverland. He was apparently close friends with Thudbud. Tootles is also Wendy's "first orphan". When Peter's children, Jack and Maggie, are abducted by Captain Hook, like Wendy he seems to actually remember that Peter Banning was once Peter Pan. When Tink comes for Peter and sees her leaving with him in a Parachute, Tootles happily affirms the sight of Peter returning to Neverland. After Peter returns to London having rescued his kids, he's overjoyed by having his marbles returned to him. As a tearful reunion takes place, he also reveals that there's pixie dust left over in his marble pouch, and bravely flies off to Neverland prior to the credits.

Peter Pan (2003)

In the 2003 film Peter Pan Tootles's character (played by Rupert Simonian) is much the same as the one in the original book.
