FAQs

Writing an effective OKR requires specificity. Create your OKR framework by clearly defining what your team hopes to accomplish and the designated time frame for achieving this goal. The more details you can include in your OKR, the clearer it will be to your collaborators.

Your OKR should also move the needle in a discernible way. Achieving a key result leads to the fulfillment of your objective, and the completion of your objective moves you toward your larger vision.

Objectives and key results follow a hierarchical flow. Start with a specific objective, splitting this bigger-picture goal into team objectives. Your smaller objectives should be critical points along the way to reaching the larger goal.

Within each team objective, identify the key results or metrics that you’ll need to hit. When you’ve met all your key results, it’s time to spring for the bottle of the good stuff—you’ve reached your objective.

An objective is a primary goal your team aims to fulfill. They can vary in scope and in the timeframe.

Key results are the concrete metrics that help you evaluate whether you’ve achieved your goal. These should be measurable key results, meaning they need to be quantifiable benchmarks that allow you to objectively judge your company’s progress. For example, “gaining five new clients this year” is an effective key result, whereas “maintaining strong relationships with clients” leaves too much room for interpretation.
