Nigeria - Floods and dam overflow, update (ECHO 20 Sep 2024)Mon, 16 Sep 2024 12:10

  • Continuous heavy rainfall and the overflow of the Alau Dam during the night of 9 September have caused severe flash floods in the Maiduguri area, Borno State, north-eastern Nigeria worsening dramatically an already very dire humanitarian situation.
  • According to UN OCHA, 37 people died, 58 others were injured and 414,000 have been affected across the Borno state. Two bridges have partially collapsed in Maiduguri, schools are closed and access to hospitals, markets and other critical infrastructures remains limited. Over 300,000 people are temporarily displaced and sheltered in 30 relocation sites.
  • In support of government efforts, humanitarian partners are responding to immediate food (wet feeding), water, health, shelter and sanitation needs and take actions to prevent outbreaks of acute watery diarrhea and cholera.
  • On 14 September, a high-level delegation led by the Humanitarian Coordinator and comprising representatives of humanitarian agencies visited Maiduguri to express continued support for the operation and solidarity with the people of Maiduguri.
