Your client is hesitant to share during coaching. How can you help them open up?

When a client is hesitant to share, it’s all about creating that safe space where they feel comfortable being themselves. I’ve found that starting with open-ended questions and being genuinely curious helps break down barriers. Sometimes, it’s not just about the question itself but how we listen—giving them time, showing patience, and avoiding the rush to fill silences. Sharing a little bit about your own journey or similar experiences can make them feel less alone, sparking the courage to open up. Ultimately, it’s about pacing the conversation and being attuned to their comfort levels. What’s worked for me is building trust, often clients just need that reassurance that their thoughts and feelings are safe in the space we’ve created.

First of all, if I perceive as a coach through deep active listening to the client's non-verbal language, that he or she does not feel comfortable and you perceive his or her hesitation in opening up and sharing what he or she brings to the session, you must communicate it assertively, sharing your perception will make the client appreciate it, he or she will realize that you are genuinely interested and it will help create a more solid climate of trust where your client can express what he or she brings to the session at that moment. Remember the client that in order to have fruitful Coaching sessions, it is necessary that trust and the greatest openness in communication are always present.
