How can you build a successful cross-functional team?

Every team member should bring mutual respect on the table. This will not only help bring positivity but also help you create a strong supportive environment. Clear processes, defined roles and responsibilities can help you identify the perfect work streams and can also help you in conflict resolution. One thing, that we usually forget is to be adaptable to someone's need.

Being a leader of a company has a significant role. You are the captain and the compass of the group. Always set an expectation and communicate what you want to achieve as a whole team. Always ask your team how can we achieve our common goal. It is important to involve them so they could motivate to do things that they are passionate about. Focus on their strengths and complement them for their job well done. Always listen to their concern so they know you are hearing them out. The key to a success team is building trust and helping each other no matter how hard the job is.

This also adds a feeling of ownership in the team members since they understand what's being built and the context behind why it's being built. This leads to better engagement and collaboration within the team.

As you begin to form the team, getting input from the potential team members about the team mission and purpose is critical. This not only helps to establish the right approach for the intended result, but provides engagement and ownership to the team members! They will be empowered and energized to make the cross functional team a success because it’s their idea!

The team members also need to be of diverse years of experience. Not all seniors and not all juniors, but the right blend. This creates mentoring opportunities for the seniors helping them grow as a leader and learning opportunities for the juniors.

It’s helpful to identify team members’ strengths and assign owners to the project’s tasks accordingly, it increases the sense of ownership for the different participants of the project. While each team member is identified as a subject matter expert within one area or another, this gives each individual a unique opportunity to showcase their skills, teach their peers, and ultimately shine and feel a sense of accomplishment.

It’s important for your business to hire the right people and capitalize on their strengths. As a leader you are going to have to also know your people to develop them further and advance them in their careers. This means not being afraid if they are better than you at certain things or micromanaging them to a point where they can’t learn. But whether in a hierarchical or flat structure (where no one's responsible for the entire team), every x-functional team needs a Culture Lead. No, this person is not responsible for planning pizza parties and outings. Their job is to facilitate the establishment and co-creation of the next most important thing to roles and responsibilities: a Working Team Agreement. This artifact outlines their personalized principles for how best to show up for one another, and the work. The Culture Lead facilitates monthly health checks to ensure everyone is on track and feeling good, and when there are trouble spots, helps the team to overcome them.

There also needs to be agreement from the top management or key stakeholders about the proposed team. This will help empower the team and ensure expectations are consistently applied!

Make sure the roles and expectations are well-documented, and clearly show who is completing each portion. This allows for transparency and can help to avoid misunderstandings.

The key to building trust is transparency and the ability to give and receive feedback without hesitation. To achieve this level of work chemistry requires the team to understand and know each other and not just be transactional in their interactions with each other.

Trust is the foundation of success for the team. Building effective relationships helps build trust! One of many activities that can help build relationships is to pair up team members to interview each other and then each team member is responsible for introducing their partner to the rest of the team with both personal and professional details so the rest of the team learns more about them. One way to demonstrate and build a since of safety for the team is to define a process for brainstorming! Clearly articulating the rules such as “no bad ideas” or “no titles”, etc. And then having the team actually perform some brainstorming activities on fun topics such as sports or music and formalize the rules of engagement will improve the success of innovation and learning going forward!

As an innovator, always find a solution to every problem. Create a unique product proposition and be the first one to create those solutions. The first creator always wins no matter what. Ask an open ended question to your team on how we can solve the problem. Build a puzzle that then helps them brainstorm and recognize those insights to inspire them to contribute.

Finding creative ways to celebrate successes big and small is a key part of a collaborative team. With the millennial generation, ensuring that each team member is celebrated in a way they find rewarding can lead to better work efficiencies and a happier team overall.

I am a fan of the reward system because I am motivated by rewards too. Always celebrate it with your team and recognize them in front of everybody so it will boost their self - esteem. When I have corrective feedback, I am following the 5:1 rule in which, you will compliment a person five times and then, giving them corrective feedback but in a positive way.

Long before cross-functional teams go to work, the senior executive needs to have done theirs. If the Mission, priorities, and culture are not important to everyone from the top down, then every team member will naturally (and probably with good intent) create the context for the project. The team could initiate a simple peer to peer recognition program of “Catch someone doing something Great”. Each team member is encouraged to personally recognize their team mates with a real time email or personal note and cc the team leader. Then at regular team meetings the team leader can highlight some or all the recognitions. The team could vote on the best recognitions for quarterly awards or for company level awards.
