FOIA and Transparency

Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)

Michigan's Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), MCL 15.231 et seq, provides that certain persons can receive copies or make inspections of most public records of public bodies upon written request. The person must sufficiently describe the records he or she seeks. The public body may charge a fee to cover the cost of complying with a person's FOIA request.

Only existing, non-exempt public records can be provided under the Freedom of Information ACT (FOIA). Tax returns and tax return information are confidential records protected from disclosure under Michigan Compiled Law 205.28(1)(f) and therefore cannot be released under the FOIA. If you are seeking tax related information, please see the instructions for submitting a Disclosure Request to the Office of Privacy and Security.
