Summer Program
Our Calgary office offers the resources of a national firm with the collegiality of a smaller office. With 140 firm members, our size makes it possible for you to get to know all of our lawyers and staff. Our legal professionals involve students in every aspect of their practices. As one of Canada’s most important financial and business centres, Calgary also provides you with the opportunity to work with leading business law experts and organizations, while enjoying a quality of life few North American cities can match.
The Osler Calgary summer student program is designed to allow you to explore our leading practice groups in a supportive and collegial environment while providing top-tier training and professional development opportunities throughout their term.
We are committed to growing our Calgary office through our Summer and Articling programs. You will work with some of Canada’s most respected lawyers across a variety of practice areas. You will be involved in all stages of our client work and are able to make a real contribution to our team. Our Summer and Articling programs are designed to challenge you in a supportive environment where you can thrive. We strive to provide an open, supportive, and professional learning environment where you can grow into exceptional lawyers.
With a focus on practical training, professional development and student feedback, our summer program is designed for students to pursue their areas of special interest, while gaining broad experience across our key practice areas: business law, energy, commercial litigation, financial services, regulatory, insolvency and restructuring, tax and commercial real estate. You will gain practical insights into current and emerging business law issues. Partnered with a lawyer who acts as a personal mentor, you are also exposed to the ins and outs of a lawyer’s daily practice.
Articling Program
The Osler Calgary articling program is designed to allow you to explore our leading practice groups in a supportive and collegial environment while providing top-tier training and professional development opportunities necessary to become a junior lawyer. As an articling student, you can continue to explore our key practice areas with the flexibility of pursuing an area of particular interest in more depth. Our professional development sessions cover a wide range of topics, including Legal Writing, Drafting Pleadings and Briefs, Contract Fundamentals and Business Development.
Throughout the articling term, each student is encouraged to explore our practice areas by working with different lawyers. At the mid-point of the articling term, you will move office locations to network internally with more colleagues, learn about different practice areas, and forge strong working relationships.
Training and Mentorship
The Calgary office provides an industry-leading professional development program. Featuring extensive in-house seminars and industry experts, our students and lawyers are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in all areas in which we practice from day one.
Starting the first day, you will participate in a two-week comprehensive orientation program. The orientation gives you a strong foundation to start right at the firm. The formal training program includes practice management, substantive law, legal skills, and business development sessions. Throughout the summer and articling term, you can participate in various training programs such as: Effective Legal Writing, The Business of Law, Emotional Intelligence & Resilience, Professional Presence and an introduction into each of our practice groups.
Our in-house education programming and dedicated knowledge management professionals are committed to providing our students and lawyers the practice skills and resources needed to tackle business-critical legal issues.
The students’ Advisors and the Director of Talent Management provide individualized guidance to keep your workload varied, interesting and manageable for your time here. You will learn from lawyers with different expertise, work styles, professional backgrounds and gain an understanding of how the different practice areas work together. Real-time feedback is provided to students throughout the summer term from the lawyers they are working with. You will also receive a formal performance review at the end of your summer.
