Roger was originally drawn by Ken Reid, who continued as artist until 1959 when he was replaced by Gordon Bell. In 1960 Roger disappeared from the comic before returning about one year later drawn by Bob McGrath. Reid returned as artist the following year and drew it until his departure from DC Thomson in 1964, after which Robert Nixon took over. Nixon drew Roger until he too left DC Thomson in 1973, with art duties going first to Tom Lavery and then to Frank McDiarmid in 1976. McDiarmid was Roger's artist for the next decade until Robert Nixon returned in 1986, drawing in a noticeably different style from his earlier strips. At the same time, the comic strip was expanded to two pages and gained a spin-off titled Roger's Dodge Clinic, where readers would write in to Roger asking him to help them dodge various situation.

Nixon continued to draw Roger until his death in October 2002, with his final story appearing in January 2003, after which Barrie Appleby became artist. He became the strip's main artist for most of the next decade, with occasional strips drawn by Trevor Metcalfe in 2003-2004 and reprints of stories from Nixon's second run appearing from 2005 onwards, apart from between March 2011 and August 2012 when Appleby took over as full-time Dennis the Menace artist. Roger appeared as Nixon reprints until Nigel Parkinson took over as Dennis's artist, allowing Appleby to return to drawing Roger. In July 2013 Appleby was replaced by Jamie Smart, whose version appeared in the comic until April the following year. He was initially replaced by Wayne Thompson before Appleby returned, and he has continued to draw the character since then.
