Ahead of the 2020 Emmy Awards nominations announcement on July 28, senior editors Danielle Turchiano and Michael Schneider review this year’s biggest contenders in Variety‘s “Awards Heat” video series presented by Apple TV Plus. This time, Turchiano and Schneider debate their favorites in the competition category.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” has dominated the category for the past two years, making it a no-brainer nominee.
Although the hype surrounding it has died down in recent years, Schneider believes “The Voice” will still receive a nom mostly due to its consistent track record at the Emmys, as well as its transition to remote filming midway through the season.
Turchiano thinks Netflix’s “Nailed It!” will be nominated once again, as its relatable charm and amateur baking twist resonate more with audiences during quarantine than ever before. As far as cooking shows go, Schneider said “Top Chef” has the ability to leave an impression on L.A. voters, with its last season diving into the city’s food culture.
“American Ninja Warrior” has been nominated every year since 2016, and Turchiano doesn’t see this year being any different, as the show’s obstacles and challenges seem to keep getting bigger. Schneider is vying for “The Masked Singer” to get a nomination due to its tremendous ratings in its post-Super Bowl premiere, and the chemistry between host Nick Cannon and the panelists.
As for their personal picks, Turchiano is going with “Legendary,” which launched at the end of eligibility and has already been impressing viewers with its artistry. Schneider is hoping for “Lego Masters,” which features Will Arnett as its host and a diverse mix of contestants.
The 2020 Emmy Awards will take place on Sept. 20 with host Jimmy Kimmel.
