Emmy Producers Regret Playing Off John Oliver During Ode to Late Dog

There’s no shortage of Monday morning quarterbacks after an awards show. But for all that went right and not-so-right during Sunday’s 2024 Emmys telecast, there’s one mistake even the producers agree on: John Oliver was played off at the exact wrong moment. Around an hour and 15 minutes into the show, Oliver accepted the award […]

Inside the Emmys: 8 Things You Didn’t See on TV

There was a lot to digest during Sunday night’s Emmys telecast, namely that telling twist of Hacks snagging best comedy over The Bear, but what happened off camera proved much more illuminating. We were there to chronicle all of the confusion, ring-kissing and sloppy standing ovations — as well as that mass exodus for the lobby bar. The […]

Emmys Preview: Producers Talk ‘SNL’ Reunion, Levy Chemistry and Leaning Deeper Into Nostalgia

The producers of the first 2024 Emmy telecast — you know, the one that was intended to take place in 2023 — came out of their show with one perfectly clear takeaway to carry into Sunday’s other 2024 Emmys: nostalgia works.  “Sometimes with awards shows, there’s a little bit of a mean-spiritedness or inside baseball, but the […]

Natasha Rothwell Is “Fine As F***”

When Natasha Rothwell set out to create her first TV series, she had no idea the corner she was writing herself into by setting it at JFK. As it turns out, there’s a reason you don’t see any workplace comedies about airports. “Standards and practices sanitized so many logos that I was wondering, ‘Is this […]

The Last Thing Standing Between Kathy Griffin and a Real Comeback

Kathy Griffin breaks her silence just once during the hourlong flight. “So far,” the redhead whispers, “it’s just a lot about food.”  Earbuds back in, she returns to the source of her frustration: hour 23 of Barbra Streisand’s 48-hour audiobook memoir. The comedian enters a semi-meditative state, eyes closed and left hand on Elliot Stabler, […]

‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Writers Break Down Those Two Spectacular Needle Drops

[This story includes spoilers for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.] Clocking in at just under two minutes, the involuntary calypso dance sequence in the original Beetlejuice, during which Catherine O’Hara’s Delia Deetz leads her dinner guests in a lip sync of Harry Belafonte’s “Day-O,” is arguably the most famous scene from the 1988 film. An homage in the […]

‘The Perfect Couple’ Killer (Actor) Talks Finale Reveals, Avoiding Suspicion and That Dance

[This story includes spoilers for the finale of The Perfect Couple.] In hindsight, Dakota Fanning’s line from that first trailer for the Netflix miniseries — “The key to this family is to just stay on the periphery” — said a lot. Though, maybe not in the way her character intended. Neither the victim nor the murderer in The […]

How the ‘Perfect Couple’ Director Talked Her Mutinous Cast Into That Choreographed Dance

As unexpected choices go, few in recent TV memory approach the opening title sequence to The Perfect Couple. Netflix’s six-part adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s Nantucket-set novel kicks off with a suspicious death on the eve of a wedding — casting doubt on every have and have-not in the deceased’s orbit. But before they get to the […]

You Can’t Scare Mike Flanagan. Can You?

He understands his lane […]
