Vent’anni di protezione della biodiversità in Europa

La direttiva Habitat rappresenta l’iniziativa più ambiziosa mai intrapresa in favore della conservazione della biodiversità in Europa. La direttiva è stata adottata vent’anni fa in risposta alle crescenti preoccupazioni, condivise all’epoca dalla maggioranza dei cittadini europei, per l’inarrestabile declino e la totale distruzione degli habitat naturali e della fauna in Europa. Assieme alla direttiva Uccelli, la direttiva Habitat stabilisce i criteri per la conservazione della natura in tutti i 27 Stati membri dell’Unione europea (UE) e permette agli Stati di collaborare, nell’ambito di un comune quadro legislativo, al perseguimento del medesimo obiettivo, ossia la protezione delle specie e degli habitat più minacciati, al di là di qualsiasi frontiera politica o amministrativa.
