20 år av skydd för den biologiska mångfalden i Europa

Habitatdirektivet är det mest ambitiösa enskilda initiativ som någonsin har vidtagits för att bevara den biologiska mångfalden i Europa. Det antogs för 20 år sedan som ett svar på den växande oro som en majoritet av européerna kände inför den obevekliga försämringen och urskillningslösa förstöringen av livsmiljöerna och det vilda djur- och växtlivet i Europa. Tillsammans med fågeldirektivet sätter habitatdirektivet standarden för bevarandet av naturen i alla de 27 EU-länderna, och gör att medlemsstaterna kan samarbeta mot samma mål och inom samma lagstiftningsram för att skydda våra mest hotade arter och livsmiljöer, oberoende av politiska eller administrativa gränser.
